Our Kind of Jewelry
Buckle Up! There is a lot here, but we really want to explain what we do, how we do it, and what makes us unique.
There are a lot of ways to make jewelry. Many brands choose speed, scale, and a lower price point, and there's nothing wrong with that. We chose something different.
Judith Bright has been making gemstone jewelry by hand in Nashville since 2005. Not assembling. Not outsourcing. Making, with wire, pliers, hammers, gemstones, and skilled hands, in our studio in the 12 South neighborhood, in front of our customers, one piece at a time.
What we actually mean by handmade
When you order a piece from Judith Bright, an artisan in our Nashville studio makes it for you. Not before. Not in a warehouse. Not in a factory. Your piece is made after you order it, by a real person whose name we can tell you, in a studio you can visit. If you're local, you can watch it happen.
This is what "made to order" means at JB: you choose your gemstone, your metal, and your size. Our artisan starts your piece. It ships when it's finished, typically within 1 to 7 business days depending on the complexity. It arrives in our signature gift wrapping with a handwritten note. This is not fast fashion. This is slow jewelry, and it's better. We do know that sometimes you need something asap, so we do try to stock a lot of variety in our less complex designs. That's why we can ship out a large portion of the collection the same day or next day.
45 gemstones, each with a meaning
We carry over 45 genuine semi-precious gemstones, from Amethyst (inner peace) to Turquoise (serenity), from Garnet (passion and love) to Moonstone (new beginnings). Every stone in our collection was chosen for two reasons: because it's beautiful, and because it means something.
Gemstone meanings aren't decorative at JB. They're central to how we design, how our team tells our story, and how our customers enjoy shopping. People don't just choose a color here. They choose a word. They choose what they need more of in their life, whether that's courage, creativity, self-acceptance, protection, or love, and they wear it every day.
If you've never shopped by meaning before, start with your birthstone. Or start with the feeling. We'll help you find the right stone. Judith's philosophy is to do a bracelet stack those stone meanings closest to her heart. One of her favorites is this stack: her late father and mother-in-law's birthstones, labradorite for strength and perseverance, Iolite for self-confidence, and moonstone for new beginnings as each day is an opportunity to be the best you can be. Try it, you'll enjoy looking down and reminding yourself of loved ones and your daily mantras.
14K gold-filled, not gold-plated
Our primary metal is 14K gold-filled, and if you don't know the difference between gold-filled and gold-plated, you're not alone. It's worth understanding, because it affects how long your jewelry lasts and how it feels on your skin.
Gold-plated jewelry has a thin coating of gold over a base metal. It's accessible and affordable, but the coating can wear through over time with daily wear.
Gold-filled is a different process entirely. A thick layer of 14K gold is mechanically bonded to a brass core through heat and pressure. The gold content is regulated by the Federal Trade Commission and must contain 1/20th of its weight in 14K gold. That's roughly 100 times more gold than gold-plated jewelry.
The result: gold-filled jewelry lasts for years, even decades, with daily wear. With proper care and cleaning, there should be no tarnishing. No fading. If you keep your skin free of chemicals from lotions, perfumes, sunscreens, and makeup products, there should be no green fingers. No regrets. It's the material that lets us stand behind every piece we make. We also carry sterling silver for nearly every piece in our collection. Sterling silver is beautiful and we love it, but it almost always tarnishes if you don't wear it every day. The beauty is that all you need to do is polish it and it's back to new. The best option for gold-filled jewelry and sterling silver is to keep items in their original box or in a covered jewelry box. It's hard to always do that since we are all running and often just keep things on the sink, but with a little Dawn Liquid Detergent and hot water you can keep your pieces shiny and residue free.
Named after real people
Almost every piece in the Judith Bright collection is named after a real person in Judith's life. The Gillian Necklace is named after her niece. The Dominique is named after a friend. When you wear a JB piece, you're wearing a name that means something to the woman who designed it. We think that matters. It's one more layer of meaning in a brand that's built on it.
One store. On purpose.
We've had stores in Atlanta, Los Angeles, Birmingham, Franklin, and The Nations. We've done trunk shows all over the country. Today we have one: our flagship studio in Nashville's 12 South neighborhood, in a cute cottage that used to be a recording studio. We're not shrinking, we're focusing. One studio means every piece gets our full attention. One studio means you get the experience we built our reputation on, watching your jewelry made by hand, choosing your gemstones in person, being helped by someone who is knowledgeable and cares about the collection.
If you're not in Nashville, that's why this website exists. Same jewelry. Same quality. Same gift wrapping. Same meaning. Made in the same studio by the same artisans. We just ship it to you instead of handing it to you across the counter.
