The Complete Birthstone Guide: Find Your Stone by Your Birth Month

Birthstone jewelry is one of the most personal gifts you can give. It says “I know when you were born, and I picked something that belongs to you.” We’ve been helping people find their birthstone for 20 years, and it never gets old watching someone discover the meaning behind their month.

Here’s every birthstone we carry, what it means, and why it matters.

January: Garnet Meaning: Passion and Love

That deep, wine-dark red is impossible to miss. Garnet is one of our strongest-trending stones, and it’s easy to see why. It’s warm, bold, and the meaning runs deeper than just romance. It’s about the fire that drives you. One thing to know: January birthstone purchases actually peak in December because of Christmas gift-buying. If you’re shopping for a January birthday, don’t wait.

February: Amethyst Meaning: Inner Peace

We carry three varieties: classic deep purple Amethyst, softer Pale Amethyst, and Green Amethyst for something unexpected. All three share the meaning of inner peace. February is a clean birthstone month for us, meaning purchases line up right with the calendar. Purple Amethyst is the go-to, but if she leans toward lighter tones, Pale Amethyst is beautiful.

March: Aquamarine & Moss Aquamarine Meaning: Inspiration

Sailors carried it. New brides were given it. Aquamarine is a stone of inspiration, and its pale blue tone is one of our most requested colors. We also carry Moss Aquamarine, which has delicate inclusions that make every stone one of a kind.

April: White Topaz and Herkimer Diamond Meaning: Good Fortune (White Topaz) / Balance (Herkimer Diamond)

Clear, bright, and full of sparkle. White Topaz is our answer to April’s traditional diamond birthstone, at a price point that doesn’t require a payment plan. It means good fortune, and it catches light like nobody’s business. A great choice for birthdays, graduations, and fresh starts. Herkimer Diamond is another beautiful April option. Despite the name, it’s actually a form of quartz, brilliantly clear with a sparkle that rivals the real thing. It means balance, and it’s perfect for someone who wants that diamond-like look with real meaning behind it.

May: Chrysoprase Meaning: Self-Acceptance

This apple green stone stops people in their tracks. May is actually our strongest birthstone concentration month, with 29% of annual Chrysoprase sales happening in May alone. The meaning, self-acceptance, makes it one of the most giftable stones we carry. “You’re enough exactly as you are” is a powerful thing to say with a piece of jewelry.

June: Moonstone and Pearl Meaning: New Beginnings (Moonstone) / Faith and Charity (Pearl)

June gets two stones, and they couldn’t be more different. Moonstone has that milky, shifting glow and carries the meaning of new beginnings. It’s our go-to for baby showers, weddings, and new chapters. Pearl is timeless and elegant, and White Pearl is our best-selling stone year after year. We carry Grey Moonstone and Rainbow Moonstone, plus White, Grey, Champagne, and Pink Pearl. Something for everybody.

July: Ruby and Carnelian Meaning: Motivation and Enthusiasm (Ruby) / Creativity (Carnelian)

Ruby needs no introduction. Deep red, unapologetic, impossible to ignore. Carnelian is the earthier option, a warm burnt orange that’s perfect for the creative types. Both are bold stones for bold people.

August: Peridot Meaning: Harmony in Relationships

That bright, lime-tinged green practically glows. August is actually our second-strongest birthstone concentration month (32% of annual Peridot sales). Peridot means harmony in relationships, all relationships, making it a thoughtful anniversary or friendship gift too.

September: Sapphire and Lapis Meaning: Mental Clarity (Sapphire) / Intuition and Wisdom (Lapis)

Two deep blue stones, two different personalities. Sapphire is confident and classic. Lapis has those gold pyrite flecks that have been prized since ancient Egypt. Lapis can be supply-constrained, so if you see it and love it, don’t wait.

October: Tourmaline Meaning: Unconditional Love

October is one of our sharpest seasonal peaks. People come looking for Tourmaline the moment October arrives. We normally carry watermelon-hued Tourmaline, but Judith recently brought back blue, green, yellow, and black Tourmaline from Tucson. Those are available only in our 12 South store in the rondelle size. Call us if you want to see them.

November: Citrine and Sky Blue Topaz Meaning: Prosperity (Citrine) / Success (Sky Blue Topaz)

November is stacked. Citrine glows like honey and means prosperity. Sky Blue Topaz is a clear, bright blue that means success. Both carry over into December with holiday gifting, making November birthstone pieces a smart choice for anyone on your Christmas list too.

December: Turquoise and Topaz Meaning: Serenity (Turquoise) / Success (London Blue Topaz)

One of the oldest known gemstones, worn across cultures for thousands of years. Turquoise means serenity and looks amazing in both gold and silver. London Blue Topaz is the deeper, more saturated cousin of Sky Blue Topaz. December is a gifting month, so birthstone and holiday shopping reinforce each other. Order early.
