October’s Birthstones: Tourmaline & Opal
October girls, your month has range. Two birthstones, a whole spectrum of color, and plenty of personality. Opal has those shifting flashes of rainbow light. Tourmaline comes in colors that can make you stop mid-conversation to ask, “What stone is that?”
Around here, tourmaline gets the spotlight. We work with it in our Mini Rock and rondelle designs, where a little stone can say quite a lot. Small, yes. Short on meaning? Never.
This October, we’re celebrating tourmaline and **Universal Love**.
A little stone with a big heart
Think of the friend who always makes room for one more at the table. The sister who checks in without needing a reason. The person whose kindness stays with you long after the conversation ends. That’s the spirit of Universal Love, and what we want a piece of tourmaline jewelry to remind you of.
It makes such a thoughtful birthday gift. Something beautiful to wear, with a message tucked inside: you are loved, and the love you put into the world matters.
Our October birthstone describes October personalities as charismatic, honest, friendly, and romantic. Sound like someone you know? Whether she’s a Libra or a Scorpio, we think a little color and a lot of heart make a lovely way to celebrate her.
More than pink
Pink may be the tourmaline that comes to mind first, but this stone has a much bigger wardrobe. It can be green, yellow, blue, black, and even more than one color within a single crystal. Its name comes from a Sinhalese word referring to mixed colors. A fitting name for a stone that refuses to settle on just one. GIA’s October birthstone guide has more on its colorful history.
At JB, tourmaline is available only in our Mini Rock and Rondelle styles. These smaller stones bring beautiful color to a delicate chain, a pair of earrings, or the hand-wrapped details of a cuff. We love how easily they slip into the jewelry you already wear.
One little pop of color with a white shirt. A necklace layered over your favorite fall sweater. A ring that catches your eye every time you reach for your coffee. There’s plenty of room for a small stone to make itself known.
A few ways to wear it
Rings
Mini Rock Nest Ring in 14K gold-filled: A little tourmaline nestled in warm, hand-wrapped metal. Lovely on its own or worked into your everyday ring stack.
Mini Rock Nest Ring in sterling silver: The same petite design with a cooler frame. Two ways to wear a favorite, depending on which metal feels like you.
Earrings
- Mini Rock Threaders: A delicate way to bring tourmaline into your everyday earrings.
- [Mini Hoops with Rondelle Charms] A little hoop, a little color, and an easy birthday gift for the friend who wears hoops with everything.
Necklaces
- Mini Rock Necklace: Keep it simple with one small stone and a meaning worth keeping close.
- 5-Stone Mila Necklace: For the person who would love a few more little moments of color along her neckline.
Bracelets
- Mini Rock Bracelet: A quiet touch of tourmaline to wear alone or add to your bracelet stack.
- Rondelle Dominique Cuff: Small stones with a bigger presence. A beautiful way to see just how much personality rondelles can bring to a piece.
And a little love for opal
We couldn’t talk about October without mentioning its other birthstone. Opal is known for its play-of-color, those flashes that shift as the stone moves in the light. It has long been associated with hope, which feels like a lovely companion to love. You can read more about both stones in GIA’s October guide.
We don’t currently carry opals at Judith Bright, but we’re very happy to help you celebrate October with tourmaline.
