The Secrets of Packing for a Jewelry Trunk Show

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Packing for a show can be either really hard or really easy depending on how crafty and organized you can get. At home trunk shows a few years ago took us up to 2 1/2 hours to set up. Back then we didn’t have the formula down. The packing supply that saves so much time is Stretch Wrap. You can get it at any office supply store.  Granted back then we also didn’t have such streamline displays that made packing soooo much easier. Your means of display, meaning your t-bars, ring stands, earring trees, all should have the same feel and look to them. The last thing you want is for your display to look like you just grabbed what you had in your room.

We have recently switched to all acrylic displays. They are the easiest to pack up and with most of them you can even keep the jewelry on them and wrap the jewelry onto the display so its all ready whenever you get to your destination. All you need is a pair of scissors to cut to wrapping off and you will be all up and ready in about an hour (depending on how much stuff you have and how your skills are with display design).

When working with plastic wrap and a t-bar all you need to do it gather the necklaces &/or bracelets and wrap the together around the top of the T then around the stem of the T. This earring tree came to us from Rio Grande the day we were starting to pack everything up for the Birmingham trunk show and we were pleasantly surprised as to how much easier they are to travel with and they display the earrings so much better than the traditional iron looking earring trees we used to use. The 3 panel earring display folds onto itself so you can hang all your earring cards on it and fold it up so you can easily wrap it shut for carefree travel. How much better is that then having to individually put the earring cards on the tree when you have to unpack and set everything up at the speed of light. Can we say tedious and time consuming?! The lifted necklace displays are really great to have for your more dainty necklace styles. It shows how the piece lays rather than it just hanging with other necklaces on a t-bar.

Another great thing to have for your display are risers. Something about having the items in the back be taller than then ones up front make your entire display look much more streamline and approachable. Seeing most of everything at eye level rather than having to look down at a flat surface is much more appealing to the eye. They are also super easy to pack up. They lay within each other and fit nicely in a large reusable bag or a plastic tub.

Since making these switches it now takes us 1 hour to unpack and 1 hour to repack. We cannot tell you how much less stressful trunk shows are now after all of our trial and error throughout the years.  Hopefully this helps and gets you motivated to do some spring cleaning of your jewelry show display!

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

Nowadays we’ve been working on the chain! Different types of chain is something that we have recently been designing a lot with and there are endless possibilities. If only we could make our own chain, but it is a whole lot harder than we thought! Its not just simple soldering it is a huge process. Here is a video about how all kinds of chain is made.

The Most Awesome Pet Training Device!

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

The last week was Spring Break and we didn’t go anywhere.  We lazed around and didn’t do much.  One of the highlights was watching the entire first season of Glee.  Go get it if you haven’t seen it, it’s so much fun! The other highlight was getting our new kitty (yesterday’s post) and still another was discovering the secret to dog-training.  The clicker!!!  The best value out there in the world of dog-training.  It cost $1.50.  We taught our dogs new tricks and they responded like never before.  It was amazing.  Pavlov’s dog in action alright!  Check out these photos of our Australian Shepherd sisters:  Lottie & Frannie.  See how completely attentive they are with this thing.  The theory is that you initially start giving them a command, they do it right, you click and then you give a treat. Eventually, all you need is the clicker and they thing that’s great.  You are associating the clicking sound with a physical reward and then when you remove it, they still have a sense of reward in their brains even when you don’t provide the treat.  It worked with their fetching which they’d been really lazy about in the past.  Playing fetch is fun for us and it’s good exercise for them so we’ve been bummed that they had an attitude to this point like, “you go get the dirty tennis ball”.  Now they can’t get enough!  We click-treated them when they brought the ball back and it is amazing!  Get that clicker I tell you!  You won’t regret it for a second!  Here are pix of the very attentive girls:

Our New Kitty: Lovie Bright!

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

Well, last week I took the dogs to get groomed at PetSmart and happened to pass by the kitty adoption room.  I was struck by a little 2 year old calico cat with the prettiest peridot-colored eyes.  The picture doesn’t really do them justice.  She and I made a connection through the glass and I went home and told the boys about her.  My two oldest and I went back and visited with her when we picked up the dogs.  She was very impressive as she hugged our necks and immediately started purring very loudly.  She was brought in by the humane shelter outside of Nashville the night before and her sticker said that her owner was allergic to her.  She had been spayed, was good with children & dogs.  She was a “slam dunk”!  We went home and got Henry, the youngest- to confer.  As I left, my husband suggested that we not get another cat as it would only be adding to the chaos and that our existing cat and dogs would be terribly jealous…and on and on.  Definitely valid reasons…  I told him that “I heard what he was saying.”  Then I grabbed the catbox and we all loaded up- just in case we couldn’t stand it.  Of course we couldn’t stand it and she’s been with us for almost a week now and we are very happy to have her.  My husband’s first visit with her was a success.  She immediately jumped in his lap and won him over in an instant.  He left the room saying, “That’s one good-looking cat.”  The boys and I all fist-pumped & high-fived one another.  (After all, we needed someone to clean the litterbox & carry the food in from the car.)  She purrs loudly, likes to sleep under the covers and enjoys tummy rubs.  The advantage to adopting a full-grown cat is that you already know who you are getting.  I hope people will think about that as opposed to getting a kitten.  The kittens always get adopted first but there are so many older sweet kitties who need your good homes!  http://www.humanesociety.org/

Launching a New Line: JB Girl

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

The Launch of a new line is so exciting.  We’ve been designing the logo, figuring out the pieces we want to include and figuring out the new fun packaging.

Here’s the logo:

We’ve been percolating for a while now about a line of jewelry for our little girlfriends.  It’s HARD out there to find appropriately cool jewelry for girls and we think we can help.  We’ve got a number of our popular styles in mini that we are going to launch soon.

Here are some things on the drawing board:

Green Isn’t Just For St. Patrick’s Day

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

The color green is really popular this season. The fashions call for greens all throughout the warm seasons. Even the yearly jewelers report says that green colored gemstones account for more than 30% of their yearly sales. There are plenty of amazing green colored gemstones. We love the peridot & green amethyst stones that we use in our designs. Peridot is a more opaque and rich green color. They can also come in a few different color variations, some being a little more milky, and rich in color than others. Green amethyst is a more transparent light green color that goes with pretty much every other color. There is a plethora of green colored gemstones out there. Emerald, Tsavorite, Chrome Tourmaline, Green Zircon, and Lemony Chrysoberyl, are just a few that are out there.

So if you don’t own anything green go through that jewelry box, hopefully you have some green JB!

Did You Know…?

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

Did you know that in the 1930′s, DeBeers, the largest diamond trading company in the world, launched its famous campaign “A Diamond Is Forever”, and we have been buying diamonds ever since. Tradition isn’t always what it seams.

Aquamarine Engagement Ring

So go against the grain and go for an engagement ring with a more beautiful semi-precious colored stone. I feel like they are more special than the normal diamond engagement ring. All diamonds look the same unlike most all amazing semi-precious stones that you can get for a decent fraction of the price. I just recently got engaged so I will be doing postings about my dress & accessory search! And but of course I will be wearing our soon to be launched JB I+DO line! Keep an eye out for that launch!!!

Knoxville Trunk Show Report!

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

We had a great time at our trunk show this weekend, hosted by Hostesses-with-the-Mostestess, Leighann Madden & Julie Kizer.  We met some great ladies and enjoyed visiting with some of our favorite Knoxville clients.  Our new designs went over really well, which is always really gratifying.  We worked hard to give our gals a lot of jewelry to choose from!  We are already talking about coming back for a Christmas show!  Thanks Leighann & Julie- enjoy your baubles ladies!
