Sam Rockwell…

Monday, July 27th, 2009

is awesome.  I went and saw the movie “MOON” last night at the beloved Belcourt Theater here in Nashville, and I enjoyed it enough to share.  Directed by Duncan Jones (perhaps the space theme should be expected, he is David Bowie’s son), “Moon” is the story of Sam Bell, a man whose job is to live on the moon for 3 years while harvesting a new form of energy and shipping it back to Earth.  Three years is a long time when you are the only living person around, your only company the robot Gerty (voiced by Kevin Spacey) whose purpose is to see to all of your needs.  Hallucinations and mind-boggling discoveries result in an…interesting…identity crisis.  Rockwell is very convincing in his role, that is all I’ve got to say.  You should see it.Picture 13

Jennifer Lopez in People wearing Paisley Earrings!

Monday, July 27th, 2009

Here’s a picture of Jennifer Lopez wearing our Paisley Earrings in this week’s People Magazine.  They are the best- some of my favorites.  They are hand-hammered & hand-shaped- light and airy!  She’s wearing them in gold-filled (http://judithbright.com/collection_item_1242.html)  They also come in sterling silver: (http://judithbright.com/collection_item_1254.html).  Both are under $60.00!!!People

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies…

Friday, July 24th, 2009

Picture 13Yes, you read that right: and Zombies.  Need I say more? Really?  You are not convinced you should read it from the title alone? Well, you are more discerning than I am, as I thought it would be amazing fun as soon as I saw it.  And it is.  Really.  Yep, not only does Lizzie have to negotiate romance through class struggles, she now has to deal with the zombie problem, aka the weird plague that has swept Europe. The phrase “ninja fighting skills” appears more than once, and now Mr. Darcy has a new reason to admire Lizzie, she is the best zombie fighter of her sisters.  Assuming you have been exposed to general literature or pop culture during your lifetime, you probably know the story of Mr. Darcy and Miss Elizabeth, even if you haven’t ever read it or seen any of the movies.  What is amazing is how little Seth Grahame-Smith had to alter the original text to fit in the zombie fighting action.  I would say it is anywhere between 80-90% of the original text with just enough thrown in to give it that extra oomph that only zombie gore can give.  Really, it was a whole lot of fun to read, and I have seen that Sense and Sensibility and Seamonsters is now available…

Shells- Gems of a Different Sort…

Friday, July 24th, 2009

I’m on vacation visiting with my family on Sanibel Island, FL which is a barrier island off the coast of western Florida on the Gulf of Mexico.  It’s a nature-lover’s paradise.  If you don’t know anything about it, you should give it a quick google.  There’s a large preserve here called Ding Darling that has many alligators and a 10 foot crocodile that’s been here for 20 years.  It swam over from the Everglades to be here, has been sent back a couple of times but keeps returning so the park rangers have let her stay, while keeping a close eye on here as she’s quite dangerous.  There are zillions of bird species and the island attracts many birdwatchers.  On any given day you can see Eagles, Osprey, Pelican’s & Ibis.  A lot of land is held in conservancy trusts so that it will remain undeveloped and kept as a sanctuary in perpetuity. Every species of animal is protected here.  There are also bobcats, cougars, snakes, sea turtles, dolphins and manatees.  We’ve seen them all with the exception of the bobcats & cougars- and we’re ok with that.  One of the biggest attractions in Sanibel is the shelling.  Because the island lies East to West, it acts as a scoup for shells.  It’s probably one of the most famous shelling areas in the world- certainly number 1 in North America.  There is also an excellent shell museum here, displaying shells from all over the world in an impressive collection.  Here are some of the shells that we’ve found on our vacation. Shells Pic We’ll only keep the perfect specimens and will return the rest to the Gulf.  The shelling highlights of this trip include:  several alphabet cones, a couple of flat scallop shells, a unique imperial venus clam, a golden striped olive & an angel wing.  We’ve also found really nice nutmegs, apple murex, lightning welks, tulips & horse conches.  As you can see, we are really into it!  It’s like treasure hunting- very addictive and no equipment needed with the exception of trained eyes, sunscreen & patience!  Shell on!

Healing Properties of the Gemstones We Offer…

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Other than for their natural beauty, gemstones have been used for their healing power.  They are worn in jewelry, placed in strategic areas of the home in the practice of Feng Shui,  ground into elixirs or used in massage.  They are used to promote health, lift the spirits, encourage prosperity, love, harmony, confidence inner peace etc.  We recently started offering sandalwood beads which are aromatic wooden beads traditionally used in malas used for Hindu & Buddhist meditiation.  Their fragrance is said to enhance calmness and a postive frame of mind.  We thought it would be great to mix our beautiful stones with these great smelling beads.  What’s great about these bracelets is that you can stack them up and choose the stones that mean the most to you personally.  So far they’ve been a big hit!  Check out this promo we sent out that shows you the properties of the stones we offer.  If you are interested in the beads, here’s a link to all of the bracelets we sell & you can scroll through the sandalwoods:  http://judithbright.com/show.php?s=cat&id=2&o=a&pg=1&v=allsandalwood for blog

oh goodie, the computer…

Friday, July 10th, 2009

Ok readers, here is a lesson on inventory and the not so much fun part of the computer upkeep stuff.  Try to keep up with it as much as possible on a daily basis.  You probably won’t, at least not if you are a small company like ourselves, because everything else is so much more fun and seems more important at the time, but it can really be a downer to realize that it got a little out of hand once you get some downtime.  And as much as I do appreciate the Jewelry Manager program, there are some things that I wish it would do.  The way it handles discontinued items can be annoying, especially if you discontinue some pieces that you still have in stock and offer for purchase (our sale items, for instance).  Jewelry Manager likes to hide them if you check the discontinued box, which means if you still have some pieces in stock and are trying to double check inventory, you have to go through this long process of finding the discontinued items, just so you know.  We have started creating discontinued categories where we put everything rather than checking the boxes until we no longer have those items in stock and are 100% sure we are never going to make them again, that way we don’t have to worry about finding them anymore.  I don’t know how many of you guys use Jewelry Manager, but if you decide to start, just keep that in mind.  Other than that, it really is a good program to use, I’m not knocking the whole thing, it can just be difficult to keep things streamlined – though I don’t know how much of that is the program and how much is the artistic creative minds of those trying to use it….
