Two Books I Think Everyone Should Own

Monday, February 1st, 2010

It being the 1st of February I shall be starting my new food schedule. After reading my favorite book Skinny Bitch, (for the 3rd time) I decided that it was time to start being conscious about what I eat. This book is a no-nonsense, tough-love guide for savvy girls who want to stop eating crap and start looking fabulous! Seriously, it says that on the front cover! Now I am not a big reader, and to be quite honest I am still on the recent vampire novel kick, but this book is one I can pick up anytime I want and either remind myself of a few things or re-read it all over again (which literally takes only a couple hours). My copy is filled with highlighted pages and doggy ears, I’m sure yours will be too! It is written by a former agent of Ford Models and a former model who holds a Masters of Science degree in Holistic Nutrition, so needless to say these girls know their stuff. Another great thing about it is that almost every sentence has a footnote so you can go right on into the back of the book and double check those footnotes, and even look them up for yourself for further information! I did occasionally. Its all about being conscious of what your are ACTUALLY ingesting. I am now an avid food label reader which in my opinion EVERYBODY should be!!! More then half the ingredients in a normal food product are genetically modified and artificial.  Did you know that most all juices are only 2% juice… from concentrate??!!! That’s where my second book recommendation comes in. Eat This, Not That is a great grocery shopping guide that visually shows you that you should be eating this, not that. Pretty self explanatory right?! It started out as a monthly mini article in Men’s Health that has now turned into a best selling dieting book. I dont go on a big grocery store trip without it. So let all start the new year by becoming aware of the REAL food industry!

Here are the Amazon links to these books. And if you love Skinny Bitch you will also those their sister books: Skinny Bitch in The Kitch, Skinny Bitch Bun in the Oven, & the new book for men Skinny Bastard. Also check out their workout DVD’s they seriously kick your butt!!!… in a good way!

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies…

Friday, July 24th, 2009

Picture 13Yes, you read that right: and Zombies.  Need I say more? Really?  You are not convinced you should read it from the title alone? Well, you are more discerning than I am, as I thought it would be amazing fun as soon as I saw it.  And it is.  Really.  Yep, not only does Lizzie have to negotiate romance through class struggles, she now has to deal with the zombie problem, aka the weird plague that has swept Europe. The phrase “ninja fighting skills” appears more than once, and now Mr. Darcy has a new reason to admire Lizzie, she is the best zombie fighter of her sisters.  Assuming you have been exposed to general literature or pop culture during your lifetime, you probably know the story of Mr. Darcy and Miss Elizabeth, even if you haven’t ever read it or seen any of the movies.  What is amazing is how little Seth Grahame-Smith had to alter the original text to fit in the zombie fighting action.  I would say it is anywhere between 80-90% of the original text with just enough thrown in to give it that extra oomph that only zombie gore can give.  Really, it was a whole lot of fun to read, and I have seen that Sense and Sensibility and Seamonsters is now available…

Some down time in Kansas City

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

Well, Judith and I are over here in Kansas City, MO, and I have some down time so I thought blogging might be entertaining.  I have realized that I need to start running a bit more, the Hospital Hill half-marathon was going on this morning, and I felt a bit out of shape when we ended up in the elevator with the fourth place finisher… right, on the list.

Other fun news in my world… Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book won Audiobook of the year, which makes me happy because I love the book as well as Neil’s reading of it – you should pick it up and listen or read it!  Sherman Alexie will also be be publishing a new book (I think in the fall) which will be a follow-up to The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, which is amazing fun, and also makes me very happy.

Alright, I should probably get back to work now, just wanted to add a quick note because I need to get better about doing this.  I’ll report on the awesome fun we have had when our trip is done (I think we may hit some art galleries this evening), and perhaps actually mention some jewelry in the next post.
